total harmonic distortion

-Figure 1-

Total harmonic distortion (THD) is a common measurement of the level of harmonic distortion present in a power system. THD is defined as the ratio of total harmonics to the value of the fundamental frequency and is calculated as:

harmonic distortion formula

where Vn is the RMS voltage of the nth harmonic and n = 1 is the fundamental frequency.

One of the major effects of power system harmonics is to increase the current in the system. This is particularly the case for the third harmonic, which causes a sharp increase in the zero sequence current, and therefore increases the current in the neutral conductor. This effect can require special consideration in the design of an electric system to serve non-linear loads.

Electric power as alternating current moves as two main waves (voltage & current) that are commonly out of phase or harmony resulting in reactive power. (Reactive Power in Figure 2a):

The Power Perfect Box and Pure Power Plug-In utilize proprietary harmonic-resistant power factor correction modules to correct electrical phase. This correction reduces apparent, reactive and total power. (Real Power in Figure 3).

Satic EMS also provides robust protection against spikes and power surges while increasing the capacity of the electrical panel by lowering amperage and operating temperature. This holistic “Power Perfect” combination of the above factors, filters electromagnetic fields (EMF) and electromagnetic interference (EMI) resulting in less waste of electrical energy while increasing the life of expensive appliances and devices, resulting in a lower energy bill and lower maintenance costs for equipment.

Capacitors have been around for 250 years. What’s different about Satic’s Energy Management Systems is that instead of using a traditional capacitor bank design, Satic has incorporated cutting-edge technology, creating a compact, integrated energy management system with the use of new Harmonic Resistant power factor correction modules (Figure 4). This allows Satic’s EMS solutions to use smaller, higher quality components that are able to switch on and off in nanoseconds, making them more efficient and effective than traditional capacitors and increasing their accessibility for more applications, more businesses and more consumers. Because energy usage is regulated by these compact, multi-board smart modules, home and business owners achieve greater than 95% optimization.

A Simple Explanation of Electricity Charges

Electricity makes all of our lives easier every day. Satic has a way for you make the world a better place by conserving energy while keeping more money in your wallet. The Pure Power Plug-In is a line conditioning, amperage reducing, power factor increasing plug-in device that will reduce the amps needed to run the electrical appliances in your home. How electricity is measured is somewhat complicated because of the numerous variables involved and the fact that each power company has it’s own policies and rates.  Our goal is to give you a basic understanding of how electricity works and is measured. Most importantly, how the Pure Power Plug-In allows you to use less energy and save money?

We have all heard of a 60-watt light bulb, a tool that requires 120 volts or an appliance that uses 5 amps but most of us don’t really understand what that means. Let’s try to define a few terms:

Voltage:

Definition - The pressure that pushes electrons in a circuit.

What that really means is how much pressure it takes to run an item needing electricity. For example, a small flashlight only needs a 1.5-volt battery to make it work. A car uses a 12-volt battery to power it’s systems. Most items in your home require 120 volts to run. Some items like an electric clothes dryer, may require 240 volts to operate.

Amperage (Amps):

Definition – The measure of electrical current traveling between two points.

What that really means is that amps are required to run electronics and appliances and the number of amps you use has a direct effect on how much electricity you purchase from the electric company.

Electrical Power (Watts):

Definition – The amount of electric current flowing due to an applied voltage.

What that really means is that watts are the amount of electricity required to start or operate a device for 1 second. Electrical power is measured in watts. And you are charged in watts. In order to measure and save you need to know the formula for calculating watts, which is:

VOLTS X AMPS = WATTS.

So if we know an electrical device has 4.6 Amps and is using the 120 Volt service in your home, then the math tells us it uses 552 watts of energy.

Electrical Energy:

Definition – Electrical energy introduces the measurement of time to electrical power.

What that really means is that in order to determine how much electrical power a device consumes you must calculate how long it consumes that power and at what rate (watts). Electrical Energy is measured in watt-hours using the following formula:

WATTS X HOURS = WH (WATT HOURS)

For example, if you read a book for 5 hours using a 100-watt light bulb you would have consumed 500 watts of electrical energy. Watts are a very small unit of measurement. Your electric company uses Kilowatt (1,000 watts) hours to measure how much electricity to bill you for. The formula to find kilowatt-hours is:

WATTS PER HOUR/1,000 = KWH (KILOWATT HOURS)

So, if you used 500 watts to read your book, you have used .5kWh (500/1,000). The average cost of electricity is $0.09/kWh, so you would be billed:

5KWH X $0.09/KWH = $0.045

Now that you have a better understanding of how you pay your electric company, we can explain how the Pure Power Plug-In reduces energy consumption and saves you money.

The Pure Power Plug-In is a device that is so easy to use, it just plugs into any outlet in your home and will reduce the Amps needed to run your electrical appliances/devices by as much as 10-40% depending on the device, saving you money.

The Pure Power Plug-In offers two additional benefits as well that increase the life of your appliances/devices. The Pure Power Plug-In will increase your Power Factor and reduces the Harmonics affecting your appliances/device.

Electromagnetic Fields:

Definition - An electromagnetic field (EMF) is a physical field produced by moving electrically charged objects. It affects the behavior of charged objects in the vicinity of the field. The electromagnetic field extends indefinitely throughout space and describes the electromagnetic interaction. It is one of the four fundamental forces of nature (the others are gravitation, the weak interaction, and the strong interaction).

The field can be viewed as the combination of an electric field and a magnetic field. The electric field is produced by stationary charges and are created by differences in voltage: the higher the voltage, the stronger will be the resultant field and the magnetic field produced by moving charges (currents) and created when electric current flows: the greater the current, the stronger the magnetic field; these two are often described as the sources of the field.

Much has been written on the ill effects of prolonged exposure to EMFs. We are not health professionals and cannot comment on these effects and will refer you to the World Health Organization or other experts in the field of human health, we will only comment that the Satic units are designed to reduce EMFs and are proven to be very effective.

Harmonics:

Harmonics are harmful to your electrical appliances/devices, especially anything with a computer chip in it.  The reason is that harmonics create heat and heat damages electric motors and computer chips, thus shortening their life expectancy. The Pure Power Plug-In reduces harmonics on any electrical circuit it is plugged into. As a result, the heat generated by these harmonics is also reduced and your electrical devices will last longer.

Power Factor:

Power factor is the measure of efficiency for the electrical energy flowing through your house. Most homes have a power factor between 75-85%. The Pure Power Plug-In will typically raise power factor to above 95%.

The higher the power factor, the more efficiently you are using the electricity being sent to you by the electric company. The more efficiently you use this electricity, the less of it you need! The less energy you use, the lower your power bill!

Electrical Terminology

Today’s modern world is primarily powered by Nikola Tesla’s alternating current. In order to understand the key attributes of alternating current, there are a few terms you must familiarize yourself with. Alternating current has 10 key attributes that are commonly discussed in SATIC materials.

1. Voltage ~ volts (V): are a unit of electrical force or potential difference that will cause a steady current of one amp to flow through a resistance of one ohm.

SATIC Simplified ~ voltage is a measure of the electrical pressure or how hard the amps are being pushed.

2. Amperage ~ amperes (A): commonly referred to as amps are a unit of electrical current or flow rate of electrons. One volt across one ohm of resistance causes a current flow of one ampere.

SATIC Simplified ~ amperage is measure of how much current or how many electrons are flowing and is therefore the flow rate of electrical energy (electricity) measured in amps.

3. Watts ~ power (W): are a measure of power and the product of voltage and amperage and the rate of energy transfer equivalent to one ampere under the electrical pressure of one volt. One watt equals one joule per second.

SATIC Simplified ~ watts are the measure of real working power.

4. Kilowatt-hour ~ energy (kWh): The kWh is a unit of energy 1,000 thousand watts acting over a period of 1 hour.

SATIC Simplified ~ kilowatt-hours are the measure of real working power used over time and are the standard of measure utilities use to bill for electricity.

5. Power factor ~ ratio (PF): is the ratio of actual real power being used, measured in watts, to the total power that is being drawn from a power source, expressed in volt-amps (VA).

PF = real power / apparent power.

SATIC Simplified ~ Power Factor is simply the ratio of real working power (watts) to total apparent power (volt-amps) VA. PF = W / VA

*A common misconception about electrical billing and real power is that volts x amps = watts. This is inaccurate as volts x amps = volt amps or total power. Volts x amps x power factor = watts or real power. This is why increasing power factor may not lower utility costs for residential consumers, yet frequently will for industrial consumers.*

6. Total harmonic distortion ~ ratio (THD): is the measure of the harmonic content or number of unwanted frequencies in the output waveform in addition to the primary or desired frequency (50 or 60 Hz.). Energy in these harmonic frequencies is lost and may cause excessive heating of the load.

SATIC Simplified ~ THD is the how far the real-time waveform is from ideal (60Hz of 50Hz) and how many undesired frequencies are on the wave.

7. Electromagnetic fields (EMF): Electric and magnetic fields are invisible areas of energy (also called radiation) produced by electricity, which is the movement of electrons, or current, through a wire. V/m, μT, W/m2.

The electric field is produced by voltage, which is the pressure used to push the electrons through the wire. As the voltage increases, the electric field increases in strength. Electric fields are measured in volts per meter (V/m).

The magnetic field results from the flow of current through wires or electrical devices and increases in strength as the current increases. The strength of a magnetic field decreases rapidly with increasing distance from its source. Magnetic fields are measured in micro-teslas (μT, or millionths of a tesla).

Electric fields are produced whether or not a device is turned on, whereas magnetic fields are produced only when current is flowing, which usually requires a device to be turned on.

Power lines produce magnetic fields continuously because current is always flowing through them. Electric fields are easily shielded or weakened by walls and other objects, whereas magnetic fields can pass through buildings, living things, and most other materials.

Electric and magnetic fields together are referred to as electromagnetic fields, or EMFs. The electric and magnetic forces in EMFs are caused by electromagnetic radiation.

8. Interference: any unwanted signal that’s combined with the desired signal is called interference and can come from external systems as well as from within a circuit itself. External sources include a number of sources such as power lines, RF transmitters, nearby conductors, ignition systems, or motors that turn on and off drawing sudden large currents.

electromagnetic interference (EMI) is the noise caused by current in other, nearby conductors or cables.

radio frequency interference (RFI) is also a source of external noise caused by radiating signals from wireless systems.

9. Ohms ~ resistance (R): Is a unit of electrical resistance of either a resistor or conductor which opposes the flow of an electric current resulting in the generation of heat in the conducting material. The measure of the resistance of a given conductor is the electromotive force needed for a unit current flow, stated in ohms.

SATIC Simplified ~ Ohms law of resistance is a measure of how much of the electrical energy being converted to heat, sound, light or mechanical work as electricity travels through the circuit.

10. Hertz ~ frequency (Hz): The number of repetitions per unit time of a complete waveform, expressed in Hertz (Hz).

SATIC Simplified ~ Frequency (Hz) is how often an event repeats itself. How many waves hit the beach in one minute is their frequency.
